The Underground Classics volume accompanies a major exhibition debuting at the Chazen Museum of Art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on May 2, running through July 12, 2009, which will then travel to additional national and international venues.

Underground Classics: The Transformation of Comics into Comix, 1963–1990

  • May 2 through July 12, 2009
  • Chazen Museum of Art
  • Brittingham Galleries VI & VII

This exhibit looks at comix as an art form and includes original art, printed pages, and covers as it charts the comic scene’s growth and change over three decades.

“The book documents the exhibit but also provides a deep context that justifies its claim to be ‘the first, serious examination of underground comix as art.'” –James Danky

“No longer burdened by pretentious notions of making ‘art,’ I am concerned with refining and communicating specific ideas of changing others’ consciousness. This is pretentious, but it’s much more fun.” –Justin Green
